This is an older heirloom form from Florida with wider and longer strappy leaves than any other of our other Lycoris species or hybrids; Lycoris aurea originally hails from China and is widespread along the lower Gulf Coast. The large 2'-3' golden-yellow flowers appear in October, rapidly reproduces, and is good for growing in zones 8b-10. This is the most tender of our Lycoris species, but has survived numerous 28 degree nights for us with mulch and is winter-growing, summer dormant. We find this Lycoris species to be our most vigorous (laughs at gumbo clay down here), does not mind being moved (unlike Lycoris radiata), goes dormant earlier, and definitely is our favorite Lycoris species!

This red Lycoris species is also originally from China and Japan; however, it was brought to the United States around the time of the civil war and has been moving around the south ever since. This Lycoris, as well as others, prefers it drier in the summer; but tolerates summer rainfall fine around here. The large red flowers appear on naked stems, usually in September or October; they persist probably longer than the other Lycoris species and make decent cut flowers too. Lycoris radiata can sometimes be "tempermental" in its blooming habits. For us, it resents being transplanted more than any other Lycoris species we grow! Its a winter grower with very thin strappy leaves, a rapid reproducer, and good for growing in zones 7-9.

This Lycoris species is native to Taiwan and blooms in a lovely, clear yellow on 2' scapes. It has very narrow, dark green strappy foliage throughout the winter. The blooms are held at a 90 degree angle from the scape; this feature, along with the differences in the leaves (they are much thinner and shorter, like Lycoris radiata) distinguishes this species from the Lycoris aurea. This one is also more cold tolerant winter grower, goes dormant later in the spring, and is good for zones 7-9.

This Lycoris hybrid is native to Japan and is probably a cross between Lycoris aurea and Lycoris radiata. It's a beautiful creamy white form of Lycoris, with a slight peachy-pink tint and reproduces rapidly in our gardens. Thin, narrow, dark green leaves on this winter-grower. It blooms in September or October in our gardens and is good to grow in zones 7-9.
