A spring flowering species native to the Southeastern United States and has large white flowers up to 5" wide and long, floppy, glossy foliage 12"-18". It likes a rich, damp, acidic soil and is a winter growing species which goes dormant in the early summer (by the end of April for us). One of the largest sized blooms of any Zephyranthes species, sometimes called the Wild Easter Lily, and is good for growing in zones 7-10.

Zephyranthes candida has 12" dark green rush-like foliage with pure white blooms with a light green throat. Although it is extremely durable and will survive in almost any location, it performs best for us in very wet and almost full sun locations. It quickly reproduces to form thick clumps and begins to bloom for us in July and continues through late November, in waves, after every heavy rainfall. This is the rain lily that the Spanish conquistadors, upon first seeing it in full bloom along the riverbanks of South America, called the river of silver. Good for zones 7-10.

The ever popular common Zephyranthes citrina does splendidly in our hot and wet climate and hails from the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. Its also bright yellow but lacks the green throat found on other yellow species. This is easily the most popular yellow Zephyranthes species grown in the United States; rather a slow offsetter, but extremely easily grown from seed. Very reliable, easy to grow, and quickly establishes a large colony in a few years if happy. Good for Zones 7-10.

This species is native to Mexico and is often referred to as "Horsetail Falls" as this is how Howard first identified it. It produces light pink, long-tubed blooms with darker pink striations on 10" stems from March through May; with sporadic reblooming in the fall. Bulbs grow quite large and it seldom offsets, so its always best to save some seeds on this variety. Good for growing in zones 7-10.

Native to northern Mexico, this species thrives in full shade and moist conditions. For us, the foliage on this species disappears during our very hot summers; but this species still blooms with gorgeous rose pink blooms (2"-3") on rather tall (12") scapes from mid-May until July or sometimes into August. A very impressive pink Zephyranthes species! Good for zones 8-10.

This unusual rain lily is native to northern Mexico and blooms 12" pale pink fading to white. This species is probably a natural hybrid between Z drummondii and Z lindleyana as it resembles both species and they have similar bloom time--Early Spring (usually April here). Loves full sun and good for growing in zones 7-10.

This Thad Howard and Scott Ogden find is very favorite yellow Zephyranthes species, out a lot of yellow species we grow. What's not to love about it? Beautiful peachy-pink stripes on keels and a good clear yellow that holds its color with minimal fading even in a scorching hot summer. Blooms heavily and constantly for us from Easter until the end of June--and then blooms off and on, depending on rain, until the end of October. A really reliable species that loves full sun; but will do equally well in a semi-shady location. Good for zones 8-10.

Native to the Texas coastal bend and Mexico; it's a small but cheerful yellow species which blooms from August through September for us. Zephyranthes pulchella is being very negatively impacted in the wild by suburban and other building and development in Texas. This one is medium height (7"-8") and good for zones 8-10.

Zephyranthes reginae is a pale parchment yellow which blooms in the very depths of a hot and hellacious Southeast Texas summer! It's native to northeastern Mexico and is Thad Howard's 'Old Valle's Yellow'. Don't let its pale, delicate blooms fool you for a minute--this species is Texas tough-as-nails! It starts blooming for us in late July and we think of it as an omen that the fall blooming bulbs of all kinds will soon grace us with their presence once again. Grows really well in zones 8-10 and is really a very pretty species!

This is a very short (3"-4") winter-growing variety that often looses its leaves in the heat of summer. It blooms for us in June and is a great pure white rain lily. 'Itsy Bitsy' performs best for us in pure shade (although winter sun is good) and in moist, yet well-draining soil.

This is a Thad Howard hybrid (Zephyranthes rosea x Zephyranthes citrina) and it definitely inherited its short stature from both its parents. It also produces offspring true from seed, and is considered a seed stable hybrid. Ruth Page's best attribute, in our opinion, is that it is the earliest Zephyranthes species to bloom for us, beginning in early March. Its always a welcome relief to see its first blooms and know that rain lily season has started again! It contines to bloom, on and off, until mid-June.
